Following is a message from a an Indian American resident in triangle area to alert the community regarding rash of burglaries and robberies among Indian Americans in the Triangle area. Some tips for protection are listed as precautionary measures.

Recently there has been a rash of burglaries in homes in Cary and rest of the Triangle area. It appears that burglars are targeting Indian-American homes. They may believe that several Indian-Americans have 22 ct ( a purer form) gold and expensive precious stone jewelry in their homes.

Also at this time of Indian festival of Diwali we may keep more jewelry at home which increase chances of major losses. Burglars may also be aware of our festivals and celebrations at the temples and they may know that we may not be at home. In fact our temples have been robbed and burglarized recently.

During past 2-3 months numerous burglaries have taken place among Indian American families in our area. Town of Cary has reported 9% increase in property crimes during past year. According to police detectives only in a small percentage of cases property is recovered or culprits apprehended. Town police have an overload of such cases and may not be of any major help.

I suggest the following precautions:

1.Keep minimum amount of jewelry , coins ,gold, silver, gold ware, silverware and cash at home. Thieves prefer items that do not have serial numbers and can be melted to recover gold , silver and precious stones.

2. Do not store jewelry and precious items at obvious places such as bedroom dresser and closet drawers. When you leave home hide them in inconspicuous places. Keep very expensive jewelry at safe deposit box at your bank.

3. If you have installed a security system turn the alarm on when you leave your home and at night. However the alarm system will not deter burglars since they generally abscond in 8-10 minutes before alarm company notifies the police and police arrives at your home.

4. Several police departments conduct a free security review of your home. Schedule such review for your home.

5. Inform friends, neighbors and community thru emails etc when you have such episode.

6.Consider installing exterior and interior video recording and internet based monitoring system. Prices for these systems have come down drastically.

Unfortunately, we have a disconnect between what some residents think and the Morrisville Police believe.

In public comments and a Q&A session, residents spoke about fears about the future of Lake Crabtree Park to burglaries that some say are targeting Indian residents.

Morrisville Police Chief Ira Jones said his officers have determined no one is being targeted due to ethnicity.

Yesterday my friend heard over Radio about burglars knocking on the doors and making forceful entry in Morrisville area...I looked for the news and found this alert.

Crime Prevention Alert

There have recently been some daytime burglaries throughout the Town of Cary. The suspect(s) are posing as solicitors and knocking on doors to determine if someone is home. If not, the suspect(s) are forcibly entering rear doors/windows and targeting jewelry, electronics, and currency. Please encourage your neighbors to call and report any suspicious activity. This includes solicitors. These are 911 calls.

Crime Prevention Alert:
RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES
The Town of Cary is seeking your help in reducing the number of burglaries taking place in service areas District 2 and 3. These crimes can happen anytime, but recent attempts were during daytime hours and predominately during the week.

To help prevent these types of crimes, please report any suspicious or unfamiliar vehicles or pedestrians in your neighborhood, to include solicitors. These are 911 calls.
Additional Tips:

Make your home look occupied, and make it difficult to break in. To schedule a free home security assessment, call 919-469-4324 and speak with Community Services Sergeant Jeremy Burgin.

Answer, but don't open, the door when someone comes to your home unannounced. Current trends indicate that the suspect(s) are knocking before forcibly entering homes they believe are unoccupied.

Lock all outside doors and windows before you leave the house or go to bed. Even if it is for a short time, lock your doors.
Consider installing motion activated lights on the exterior of your home to illuminate your property.

Keep your garage door closed and locked, even when home. If you do leave your garage door open and it is an attached garage - lock the door into the house.
Consider installing an alarm system with motion sensors for your property. It is an excellent option for home security and provides peace of mind to homeowners, especially while on vacation.

If you have information about a crime, please contact the Town of Cary Police Department at (919) 469-4012 or Cary Crime Stoppers at (919) 226-2746

Cary Police release image of thief caught on video.

Cary police on Friday distributed video images of a man who is believed to be is responsible for several daytime burglaries of homes in the area of Two Creeks Road and High Meadows Drive.

Investigators are hoping someone will recognize the man, who is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall to 6 feet tall and in his late teens or early 20s.

The burglaries have happened over the last two weeks, and the thief has entered the homes by breaking back windows or doors. In one case, several weapons were stolen from a home.

“It is a particularly bold individual who breaks into homes in daylight,” Cary police Capt. Randall Rhyne said in a statement. “Our residents’ safety is our primary concern, and we ask them to call the police department anytime they see suspicious people or activities.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Cary police at 919-469-4012 or Crime Stoppers at 919-460-4636. Crime Stoppers pays cash for anonymous tips that lead to arrests.

Police say recent Cary, Morrisville break-ins not gang-related

"Jones said he also is addressing misconceptions among Cary and Morrisville residents that criminals are targeting the homes of Indian families.

That’s not true, he said, although he acknowledged the concerns among that community. He and Cary officials are organizing a meeting with local Indian families to address crime issues on Jan. 10 at Cary’s Bond Park Community Center."
