Basant Bahar 2015 : “Virasat- Heritage of Ancient Indian Sciences and Mythology”

By Jashi Abhirajan

Partnering with the Town of Cary, HumSub brings to you two annual events – Basant Bahar at the advent of spring and, Cary Diwali at the peak of Fall Colors. While Basant Bahar reflects the essence of Indian Classical and Folk culture through leadership and civilizations spanning millennia, Cary Diwali brings forth the colors, joy and festivity that is so natural to people from Indian Subcontinent.

Basant Bahar over the years has showcased different facades of Indian Culture themes. In this era of rapid globalization and amalgamation of identities, HumSub attempts to preserve what is uniquely precious. This year, the focus was on what has been handed over to us from generations past, the depth and breadth of knowledge and wisdom cultivated through diligence and dedication, the advancement in Science and importance of Mythology as a tool to teach moral values, the gift from Ancient India to the world, the Virasat that has enriched us all.

The event this year had two productions to concentrate on the two aspects of Virasat – Shri Krishna Parijatham, depicting a tale of devotion and dominance from Indian Mythological treasure and, Sanatan Drishti, showcasing Ancient India’s contribution to Science and math. These productions came from accomplished and renowned dance schools of this region -Kubi Creative Arts Production and Nrityanjali Academy of Dance, respectively. Shri Krishna Parijatham was an audio-visual treat that left the audience mesmerized and humbled at the same time –mesmerized by the sheer richness of choreography, music, costumes and overall presentation and humbled by the enriching life lessons subtly conveyed by the story behind. The story is about Shri Krishna and his two consorts, Rukmini and Satyabhama and Parijath, the celestial tree.

Sanatan Drishti was a lifelong learning lesson, a colorful infotainment and discourse on India’s contribution to various disciplines – from Vedic Science of the Cosmos, Navigation Art, Yoga to Medicine and Surgery. On one hand we learnt about the contributions to science by an Emperor Scientist, Jahangir, we also showered in the spiritual beauty, the song celestial, Shrimadbhagwatgita.

The cultural cornerstone of Cary, the Cary Art Center, played a generous host to an evening of richness that is a testimony of diverse, multicultural rainbow called Cary! This housefull, free event was attended by the esteemed citizens of Cary and nearby towns, led by the Mayor of Cary Harold Weinbrecht. The creative genius and untiring effort by participants of all age groups was reflected in the high quality and coordination of both productions.
